KONAMI announced that total sales of its popular Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game have exceeded 22.5 billion cards.* Guinness World Records™ officially recognized this sales milestone, making Yu-Gi-Oh! the top selling trading card game in the world, in a decision made this July 7, 2009.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, which has been on the market since 1999, is based on the manga of the same name created by Kazuki Takahashi. The manga started out as a regular feature in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine back in 1996 before it began airing on TV Tokyo as an anime series. The popularity of the thrilling card game adaptation, sold worldwide, has reached phenomenal proportions in Japan, North America, and Europe.Yu-Gi-Oh! has spawned a wide range of entertainment content in a variety of formats, such as trading card, video and online games, that are enjoyed by people around the globe.
Since 2003, Konami has hosted championship card and video game tournaments every year to bring fans from all over the world closer together. The 2009 tournaments are scheduled to take place in August.While last year marked the 10th anniversary of the trading card game, this year is the 10th anniversary of the television anime series in Japan where a host of special activities and events are scheduled to be launched.
A special video featuring the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series' main characters, Yugi Muto, Judai Yuki and Yusei Fudo, will be produced and shown throughout Japan.
